Many enthusiasts think the Syma S107G is the ultimate helicopter in the budget class for beginner rc flyers.

This is a huge title to hold as there are many hundreds of small remote control helicopters on the market.

So why does the Syma S107G have such a great reputation?

There are a variety of things to have a look for when choosing a first remote control helicopter. These include: ease of use, economy, robustness, performance, spare parts and most of all, fun. For those who actually get bitten by the rc helicopter bug, an extra bonus is also “modability” – or how easy it is to modify the copter for enhanced performance.

Simplicity of Use

The Syma S107G is a 3 channel coaxial chopper. The 3 channels makes reference to the planes of movement. In this case the 3 channels refer to up and back down, forward and back, and yaw control: the power to revolve right or left when taking a look at the helicopter from above. These functions are managed by 2 joysticks on the remote control. The Syma S107G controller also has trim control which is a turn knob that lets the pilot to refine the movement of yaw when the joystick is in the neutral position. Fundamentally it’s a technique to tune the rotors so the helicopter flies or hovers without turning when the turn joystick is in the neutral position.

Coaxial alludes to the 2 main rotors supplying the lift of the helicopter. RC helicopters can be coaxial: Two main rotors spinning in opposite directions or single rotor, like a full-size helicopter. Coaxial ‘copters are often more staight forward to fly. They produce better lift and more steady hovering capability with the trade off of barely less performance when it comes down to flight speed or manoeuvrability. This is of course excellent for a beginning rc pilot and the S107G still provides plenty of flying performance for an indoor helicopter.

Charging is as straightforward as plugging the heli into a USB connection of a PC or the recharge plug of the RC.

Economy

Like any past-time it’s best not to overspend on an initial purchase unless the hobbyist is sure the passion will be there for the long run. The Syma S107G is very cheap to buy and repair or in worst cases? Replace.

Robustness

The S107G is a full hobby grade rc copter even though it is typically cheaper to buy than some toy copters. The S107 has a robust aluminium frame, and light plastic rotors and cover. The S107G is known for its durability and its capability to withstand crashes and accidents. When you’re new to something mistakes are certain to arise and the last thing a new pilot wants is to see their new bird out of action after 1 or 2 flights. This is also important when purchasing the S107G as a gift for men. You want the gift to be of use and to last.

Performance and Fun

The S107G is a stable and acrobatic small helicopter and this is the fundamental reason for the S107g’s loyal following. A fast search of YouTube will return lots of videos of proud S107 pilots showing off their flying ability.

The built-in gyroscope maintains smooth flight while the pilot focuses hard on direction and height.

Powered by a 3.7V lithium polymer battery flight time is around 5-7 minutes and a recharge takes around 30-40 minutes from the provided USB wire.

Due to the grand performance of the Syma S107G users derive brilliant fun from their flights. Many users are so happy with their small heli’s they are going online in pursuit of techniques of making it far better.

Spare Parts and Modability

Luckily for them, spare parts are readily available as well as many guides for modifying the S107′s performance. The most typical and straightforward modifications usually involve putting a small weight inside the plastic canopy to minimally change the centre of gravity of the helicopter. With a mild lean forward, the S107 will fly forward quicker.

Some hobbyists experiment with more difficult mods like different batteries, and rotors. This is all good fun if you like playing with your pride and joy, but fully nonessential if you simply need to enjoy your chopper that flies brilliantly right our of the box.

The Syma S107G can now be bought as a present from www.PixieGifts.com.au. Each chopper is charged and pre-flown, to check that the copter is 100% functional and to adjust the trim control. Batteries are also installed into the RC. After the flight checks have been completed the remote control helicopter is then repackaged into its original box, gift wrapped and sent to any address in Australia. All your revipient has to do is open their gift and start flying.
