Batik” is an Indonesian word originates from Javanese word “amba”, and “titik” meaning to write dot or point. The essence of the batik Indonesia process is to produce a design on textiles through the use of a “dye-resist”. In the batik process patterns applied on a sheet of base fabric (usually undyed cotton or silk) using hot wax as resisting agents

Once the wax dried, fabric then dipped in a dye-bath of a particular color for the first dying steps. Wax prevented the dye from penetrating covered areas of the fabric. The first pattern of white lines exposed after the wax removed by dipping the fabric in hot water. The whole process can be repeated a number of times in order to attach more pattern with different colors. How many times the process to be repeated depends on the pattern complexity the designer wishes to achieve.

Batik solo as city of batik has many method also abocan be differentiated by method use to ut how to produce batik. Solo batik art applying wax during the making process. Which are

Batik Tulis (hand write batik ) is the method of applying waxes by drawing onto fabric by hand using a pen-like tool called canting. Waxes applied on both side of the fabric. This process obviously done by women, it is very time consuming, requires high level of skill, experience, patience, and concentration. These are qualities highly valued by the Javanese. That’s why batik tulis was considered to be a way to develop spiritual discipline among women of the court.

Since the whole process was done manually, it is the nature of batik tulis fabric to be imperfect. With a careful observation it can be noticed that no repeated patterns or motifs are ever identical. (Although they supposed to be match each other). Other flaws that might detect are smearing, discontinue of lines or cracking. Somehow these minor imperfections are not considered as defect, instead they’re considered as an actual sign of authenticity.
The exclusivity of batik tulis is unquestionable; often one design is prepared only for one piece of cloth.

Combination Batik . As the name implies, this uses a combination of tulis and cap to complete batik process. Cap used to draw intensely repeated pattern, while detailed motifs finished by hand write (tulis).

Cap or tjap (Stamped Batik). This is the method of applying wax by hand using a stamp. A cap or stamp made with narrow strips of copper that are twisted and shaped into batik design, then soldered to an open metal base.
Stamp process obviously done by men. Using stamps make the whole process faster, it’s also provide consistency and similarity of patterns. Batik cap is more economic way to produce batik, since wax applied on only one side of the fabric.
The tedious thing of this method is to make the stamp it self, every time when a new design introduced.
