Because times are tough economically, many people have decided not to rejuvenate their dated home because it’s too costly.  If you’re in that same financial state, be assured that you can make your home look like new with upgraded features and not have to spend all of your savings.

Remodeling the Basics on a Budget

Start with fundamentals when contemplating a remodel.  Look at the ceilings, walls, and floors first. This is the basis for your remodel. If you have an acoustic ceiling, consider either repainting it a bright white or hiring someone to resurface and retexurize it with a flat pattern. Don’t forget to paint on a high-grade primer before your paint coat!  Next, look at the walls and select neutral tones that will flatter open and airy tones and will go with any décor. Fix any holes and marks in your walls and doors so your home looks fresh and refinished. Next, continue with the floor areas: are the baseboards and flooring in good condition?  If yes, repaint the baseboards a nice white color to give the home a new and updated look. If you plan to remove and replace the floors, consider stone tiles, because they are low cost per square foot and last much longer than carpet does.  If you will be installing carpeting, choose a compact pile that is a shade of brown or beige so that stains will not be as visible and the carpet will be resilient against crushing for a long time.

Kitchens and Bathrooms are Key

Modernizing your kitchen and bathrooms are the wisest fixes you can put into your home. If the cabinetry is in good structural shape, consider either refinishing the existing cabinets or replacing them.  If you will be re-facing them, get a good Makita drill and remove the hardware from the cabinet doors to release them.  If needed,  you can buy replacement cabinet doors from your local hardware store. To save even more, use the cabinets you have and refinish them. Again, remove the doors from the cabinets and then apply a paint stripper to the existing finish and scrape it off with a special scraper made from hard plastic just for this purpose. Once all trace of the old finish has been removed, sand the cabinets once over with a spindle sander using medium-grit sandpaper. A final sanding should be done with a fine-grit sandpaper after that. Rub the cabinets with a cloth to remove the dust and then spread a wood conditioner to the cabinets. Finally, stain or paint the wood and finish it with two or three clear coats to protect the wood from water exposure.

How to Make an Impact Through Design

Improving your furniture and home décor is a simple, but dramatic way to make your surroundings look like new. You can find great deals at yard sales, discount design stores, and online which will save money.  For even bigger savings, create furniture by yourself. You can make a beautiful headboard, for example, with nothing more than two over-sized splindles or posts of wood, a lathe (you can borrow this from someone), and a large rectangle of board made of wood.  Cover the wood in the center area with some batting, fabric, and unique upholstery nails for a new headboard that is truly stunning!

Perhaps you’re fixing up a new home or wanting to re-do the one you live in. Either way, these great tips for getting the most out of your home will help your living quarters look brand-new without spending too much money in the process.

Knit Wits

In a shady storeroom, two good-fellas prepare to initiate their junior partner into the “club”… or so it would seem. But sometimes, things aren’t always what they appear, and this is the premise of KNIT WITS, a five-minute dark comedy by award winning Writer-Director, Warren Eig. Carmine (Robert Costanzo) and Johnny Finger (John Capodice) rendezvous with neophyte good-fella Joey (Darrin Reed) under veiled circumstances.
