Even though the economy isn’t great right now, that doesn’t mean people still don’t want to be able to give lavish baby showers for their friends. The key to doing this in a down economy is to cut corners in areas that won’t be noticed. There’s no reason that can’t begin with the baby shower invitations and move right on through the shower decorations and the scrapbooks created after the fact.

One way to do that is to use good baby graphics. Often there are stylish images available on the web for no charge. Just enter the search term “free baby clip art” and the type of image you want. For instance, if you’d like blue baby boy clip art, type those words or some variation. That will work with almost any baby shower theme you can think of, although the more obscure the concept, the less likely it will be that you’ll get enough good search results. If you’re lucky enough to find high resolution art when you search, you’ll open up more options for using it. The reason for that is that you need high-resolution images for print pieces, such as invitations or decorations. You can’t use low-resolution clip art because the final printed piece would be low quality. That would, of course, be unacceptable for baby shower decorations or invitations.

But clipart isn’t the only baby art resource you can find free on the ‘Net. There are also many sites that present baby scrapbooking paper. Many scrapbook paper and embellishment designers give away no-charge versions of their baby shower scrapbooking designs to promote paid products or their  pages that have advertising. Use of either model means they have financial incentive to offer free scrapbooking papers and embellishments. No matter why the free scrapbook materials are offered, the new mom wins! The themes for these are almost as numerous as there are fish in the sea, so they can be used instead of or in addition to clip art to make shower invitations and decorations. Themes range from fun to retro to luxurious and classy. In case you didn’t know, retro is particularly popular right now, so you might want to try searching for free retro baby scrapbooking embellishments. A mother-to-be who is into that kind of art would probably be thrilled to have that as her baby shower theme!

It goes without saying that all the clip art, scrapbook papers and embellishments can also be used to preserve baby shower memories forever in a baby shower scrapbook that would make an excellent gift for the mother-to-be. This means the time you spend looking for images will pay off over and over, giving the new mom a baby shower she’ll remember always.

The Challenge of Model Railways

If it goes round and round, it’s a toy train. However, if  the locomotive leaves the station, speeds up through the brick tunnel and as it passes into the mountain’s shadow, a pale hand comes down, lifts it up and puts the locomotive back in its box then it’s a model railway.

That’s the difference and that’s the attraction of railway modelling. It’s a world many thought populated by geeks, anoraks and those without a meaningful social life.Maybe a step above train spotting in the un-cool stakes until Rod Stewart – yes, the Rod Stewart – saw his model of the 1940s New York Grand Central Station on the cover of Model Railroader magazine.  Model train sets are sexy again.  Just ask Jools Holland, one of the coolest men on the planet, or impresario Pete Waterman as well as Rod.

So what is the appeal of this hobby aside from creating your own pristine world where all the trains do run on time!High among them must be the sheer number of skills you need to master to create a working layout. You have to be a semi-competent carpenter, electrician, metalworker, painter, sculptor and designer to make anything that looks good. A degree in computing science will also help to fathom the hugely complex solid state controllers available nowadays (gone are the simple turn knob right or left little black boxes).   There is also something about trains, of any scale and size, that is endlessly fascinating although many model railway enthusiasts would claim that the idea of standing on a cold station platform and counting train numbers as they zoom past is beyond madness.

The idea that you can create a world in miniature is hugely appealing.  Such precision, of course, takes time. Baseboards must be built, layer by layer, tracks laid, points installed, then scenery added, from stations to sheep. Model railway layouts, like the Forth bridge, are never finished. There are always extras, always improvements, always flashes of imagination to manifest themselves. There will be tittering and some ridicule when people find out you are into model train sets,  but then, almost inevitably, something strange will happen to you mates.Someone will say: “Can I have a try?” and as you set a train in motion you can see the light iopf their youth in their eyes. You can almost hear them thinking:  “I’d like one of those. I wonder if we’ve got the space in our attic too. . .”

Why Fly RC Aircraft?

The hobby of model aircraft flying has been popular since the early part of the 20th century.Indeed, the very concept of powered flight depended on using models to test theory.   Flying model aircraft is by no means restricted to radio control and before the advent of this advanced technology, modellers were flying a variety of free flight and fixed control line models.

A free flight model flies under power, but there’s no means of directional control. It has to be pre-trimmed and it flies and lands where it wants to – you have no control at all!Control line flying is still popular and features two long control wires attached to the model aircraft’s elevator via a handle similar to a kite control handle.  There is no direction control of course as the aircraft is forced to fly the circle around the operator (who also has to spin with his machine) dictated by the length of the control wires.

During the 1950s, miniature diesel and petrol engines were further developed and more importantly electronics began to get less bulky with the introduction of the transistor.  Radio control aircraft became a practical reality and more recently electric rc helicopters have bought thousands of people into the hobby.   Similarly, small electric rc aircraft can be bought from practically any kind of hobby or toy store and flown with no experience whatsoever.Like any hobby that evolves from toys, model aircraft can come in distinct grades of complexity.

The cheap and cheerful plastic/electric toys are great for kids but further up the scale, some model aircraft are genuine scaled down engineering copies of actual aircraft or entirely original designs. The attraction of radio control flying lies in the fact of being in control of something and being able to make it do what you like in all that free airspace.Learning to fly rc aircraft or helicopters is part of the fun too. Crashing is part and parcel of the radio control aircraft hobby!

As in the real aviation world with STD (Synthetic Training Devices) you can even buy rc flight simulator software products that let you learn to fly rc from the comfort of your own armchair.   For many, the pleasure of radio control aircraft comes not only from flying them, but also from actually building an rc aircraft, helicopter or any other type of model.Indeed, many modellers see the building of a model more of an attraction than flying it, and it’s true that there’s a huge amount of satisfaction in seeing a model develop from a box of bits into a fully flying plane or helicopter.

Quilt Types – So Many to Choose From

So, you’ve decided to get back to your roots, do something natural and relaxing – you’ve decided to make a quilt.  Your first step is to choose which type of quilt you’d like to make; which will be most satisfying and beautiful!

The list below is a simple compilation of the different types of quilt styles that exist with a short explanation of each style.  If one intrigues you, you can do more research by visiting the dozens of wonderful internet sites or browsing through the many books available on quilting from Amazon.com

The major types of quilts are:

·                 Patchwork or Pieced

          *Traditional

*Friendship – spaces for friends to sign, perhaps a going away gift

*Crazy – Haphazard design, all different fabrics with various textures and

colors.  Victorian styles were done with satins and velvets.

          different patterns

*Celtic – Continuous weaving line, “Road of Life”

*Appliquéd Center Medallion – A centered main appliquéd panel

surrounded by a series of borders

 ·                 Watercolor

Somewhat like a jigsaw puzzle.  For the very artistic, uses several different

patterns and colors of fabric (very light to very dark) cut into small squares

and used to make a painting-like design that you create.

 ·                 Whole Cloth

Also know as “White” quilts.  Large single piece of fabric (usually white)

where the quilting stitches are the actual design.

 ·                 Strip

Parallel bars or bands of fabric arranged vertically, horizontally or diagonally.

 ·                 Pictoral

Realistic pictures of people, animals, objects or scenes as the pattern.

 ·                 Embroidered

Design embroidered on top piece, no batting in between layers.

Picking the right type of quilt is the first step.  For the beginner it seems very daunting as the steps progress, but once all is in order and ready to go, quilting will hopefully become a passionate craft that you’ll enjoy for years to come.

Homemade Soapmaking

Are you interested in learning about how to make soap? There are a wide variety of ingredients available to make homemade soap. The list ranges from the basic ingredients of water, lye, and oil to optional ingredients such as oatmeal and even glitter. The ingredients you choose will determine the qualities and characteristics of your soap. Some people who make homemade soap stick to the basics and simply add fragrant oils to put some scent into their soaps, while others add abrasive materials such as oatmeal for exfoliating purposes. Here is a list of some common supplies and ingredients used in making soap and what characteristic they can provide your soap:

Basic Ingredients to Make Homemade Soap

Carrier Oils

The type of soap you will make determines the base soap you need to use. Do you want your homemade soap to be hard? Soft? Sudsy? You can start finding out about the different base oils by reading the labels of commercial soaps you use regularly. You can also sign on to mailing lists and join soap making groups online; most of the people who know how to make homemade soap are very willing to share information with others.

Carrier oils impart the primary physical characteristics of the soaps. Hard and long lasting soaps can be made from palm oils; soaps that give a good lather can be made using coconut oil and castor oil; olive oil, canola oil or soybean oil may be used to make moisturizing and conditioning soaps; and luxury soaps can be made using cocoa butter, hemp oil, and almond oil among other things. Oils such as almond and avocado oil provide a skin softening characteristic to your soaps. Different oils mean different soaps. Once you become familiar with the properties each oil imparts, you will begin to recognize what kind of bar a particular recipe will produce.

Lye

Lye is the most important ingredient in making soap if you are using the cold or hot processes. Sodium hydroxide or lye is a very strong chemical and handling it requires serious caution. You also need to choose your utensils carefully when dealing with lye – use only wooden and plastic spoons for stirring and bowls made of enamel, plastic or glass for mixing. Only cold water should be used with lye, and always remember to pour the lye into the water.

You cannot make homemade soap bars from scratch without using lye. If, however, you do want to skip using lye, you can try using the melt and pour method with pre-made glycerin soap bases.

Water

Another main ingredient in soap making, water is essential to the process. For the best results, use distilled water for creating your lye solution. You can also use de-mineralized water in soap making.

Other Ingredients

Other ingredients you can include once you have learned how to make homemade soap are herbs, flower petals, glitter, colorants, essential oils, and fragrant oils.

Herbs and flower petals can add scent to your soap, but you should remember that these can be burned when added to hot processed soap. Some other herbs do not look at all appealing when used in soaps. If you want to use herbs in your homemade soap, do your research and find out what herbs can are good for use in making soap.

Colorants come in different forms – liquids, powders and glycerin based colorants are common. Use these to add color to your soap, however, you should also remember that all other ingredients can affect the final outcome of your soap color.

Glitter can be used to add a certain punch to your homemade soaps. Use cosmetic grade glitter; these come in ultrafine and fine sizes and in a wide variety of colors. Do not use glitter made for use in craft projects as they are not meant to be used on your skin.

Essential oils and fragrance oils can be added to your soaps to give it a therapeutic effect. Chamomile and some other essential oils can be expensive. It really is up to you if you want to add essential oils to your soap. If you want to simply add a scent without a therapeutic effect, you can opt to use fragrance oils instead.

Knowledge of ingredients as well as creativity and imagination is required once you know how to make soap at home in order to create something that is truly unique. When making your own soap, do your research and do not be afraid to try out new things.

The Art Of The Quilt

A quilt is frequently handed down through generations, and a quilt isn’t something that is thrown about roughly. They can innovate and among their creations is quilting the edges of a binding so that it can be covered well. Quilting is like a fever and once you catch it, you go on quilting. The outcome is beautiful quilts with modern designs and patterns.

How to Choose the Best Knitting Needles

Some More Knitting Needles

You have many options when buying knitting needles. Not only do you have to decide on what type you need, but you also have to choose what type of material the needles are made from. Both decisions are influenced by what you will be knitting and by personal preference. To help you choose the best knitting needles for your project, here is a brief description of these two factors.

Materials Used For Needles:

Knitting needles are made from a variety of materials. The type of material used provides friction that will influence how easy the stitches come off the needle. Sometimes a needle that is rougher is preferred so that the stitches don’t slip off the needle accidentally; while other times speed is important and a smoother needle is required.

Wood: These needles have a rough surface. They are light weight and considered environmentally friendly because it comes from a renewable resource. Bamboo needles are a very popular wood option. Bamboo is particularly environmentally friendly because it can grow as fast as 3-4 feet in a single day.

Metal: Metal needles are very smooth. This allows the stitches to easily slip off one needle and onto another needle. Experienced knitters who want to complete their project very quickly prefer this type of needle. Metal needles are very durable and hard to break. Aluminium is the most common type of metal used for metal needles.

Plastic or Acrylic: These needles are light weight, flexible and inexpensive. They usually have a different colour for each size the needle comes in, especially when they are sold as sets.

Types of Needles:

There are three main types of needles: circular, double pointed and straight. Each type of needle is used to produce different results, often referred to as flat or circular. Flat knitting creates flat pieces, such as scarves, while circular knitting creates circular pieces or tubes without seams. Some needles can only produce one type of result, while others can create several different types of results.

Circular: Circular needles have two needles at both ends with a flexible cable in the middle. The cable is long, anywhere from 24 to 60 inches. The needles at the end are short, inflexible and have tapered ends. They make it easy to add new stitches, while the cable holds the stitches after they have been added. When knitting with circular needles, hold one end in each hand. The advantage of circular needles is that they can hold hundreds of stitches, the stitches won’t fall off the needles and the flexible cord in the middle can rest on the knitter’s lap so that the weight of the stitches is not felt. Circular needles can be used for flat or circular knitting.

Double Pointed (Dpns): These needles are short and straight, but both ends of the needle are tapered. Stitches can be added from either end of the needle. Double pointed needles are used for knitting tubes, such as sleeves and socks. Four to five needles are used at the same time when knitting with dpns. One needle is used to add stitches, while the other needles hold the stitches in place. One specialized type of dpns are cable needles, which look like dpns, but they are shorter and have a dimple in the middle of the needle.

Straight Needle: The needle is long and straight. There is a knob or cap at one end, which prevents the stitches from falling off the needle. At the other end, the needle is tapered, similar to a sewing needle but it is blunt instead of being sharp. When knitting with straight needles, two needles are used. Straight needles are used for flat knitting, for example scarves or shawls.

Learn to Make Lye Soap

When it comes to handmade soap, people have been making lye soap for thousands of years. Whether they use the hot process or the cold process, lye soap is a staple in most cultures. While lye is a harmful substance in its pure form, with the proper precautions, you can safely learn how to make lye soap that can be both decorative and functional.

The Benefits of Making Lye Soap

When lye is combined with oil it goes through a chemical reaction called saponification. During this process, both soap molecules and glycerin are formed. There are two main methods used for creating soap in this manner; the hot process and the cold process.

As the names suggest, one has heat applied during the process while the other does not. The use of the heat in the hot process accelerates saponification and makes your soap ready for use more quickly. Nevertheless, that method is more complicated and most hobbyists choose the cold process in order to make their soap. With the cold process, it can take several weeks before the soap is ready for use.

You used to be able to obtain lye from your local store but due to its harmful qualities, most stores have pulled it from their shelves. Lye is still easily obtained online, however, and you can readily find soap suppliers to sell you lye in whatever quantities you need.

The Cautions of Making Lye Soap

When making lye soap you need to be extremely cautious. Lye is a very harmful substance before it goes through the saponifcation process. It will cause serious burns if it comes in contact with your skin or eyes. When you are learning how to make lye soap, it is vital that you acquire the proper safety habits and equipment. Be sure to have gloves, safety goggles, and a working surface that is protected. It is recommended to use products that are glass, enamel, plastic or wooden to mix the water with the lye to prevent any unwanted reactions from taking place. Also, make sure your working surface is well separated or protected from surfaces where you prepare and consume food. If you buy a large quantity of lye and you will not use it all at once, keep the remainder well labeled and out of reach of children or pets as it can be very harmful to them.

The first steps to making lye soap are to measure the lye and the water. Lye is commonly sold in brick form, which makes it easy to measure. When making lye soap, however, it is important to remember that you always add the lye to the water. Water and lye have an interesting chemical relationship and if you were to pour the water into the lye, the lye might explode getting the chemical on your skin and whatever else is around. If you add the lye very slowly to the water, the lye does not explode but, rather, heats up the water – sometimes getting as hot as 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Basic Cold Process Instructions for How to Make Lye Soap

After the lye and water are combined to create the lye solution, add it to a pot of oils you have prepared to make the soap mixture. Stir the soap mixture until it thickens and reaches “trace”. It is at this point that you can add your scents and colorants to customize your soap. Stir them into the soap mixture and pour it into your molds. Let the soaps set for 24 hour before removing it from the molds and allowing them to cure for 4-6 weeks.

While there are a lot of precautions to be taken when it comes to making lye soap, it can still be a very enjoyable hobby. People have been making lye soap for generations and, with the variety of colors and designs available to customize the soap, it has become a luxurious handcrafted product found in gift stores and bath stores alike. Now it is time for you to test your hand at learning how to make lye soap!

You might be surprised with this but it is absolutely true. Coin collecting is now a very popular hobby. Even those stamp collectors are turning their heads in learning how to collect coins. How to collect them? Isn’t that very over-the-edge? Not so. You see, when you collect coins, you collect different kinds of coins that came from around the world and mostly are priceless antiques. When you are into this sort of thing, you need to learn how to detect a fake “species”. If a person can collect a whole set of rare comic books or a tons of action figures and they just put them in one corner of the house, you can’t see why you can’t do collect coins and maybe, someday, one of these day, you might earn good money from it, right?

The thing is, because a lot of people are now totally engrossed with this new hobby, actually, it’s not new, but a “renewed” hobby, a lot of websites right now are even giving some tips and ideas on how to collect coins the right way or the right system. But the main query here is: “Why try to collect coins?”

You see, it all depends on a person why he’s very interested in collecting coins for a hobby. It all depends on one’s interest and what really tickles him, so to speak. You know very well that coins are also part of the human history and they can tell a lot of things like where they’ve come from, how a civilization was born and all that stuff, and if you’re interested in archaeological and historical facts, coin collection is best for you. There are even others who would really see coins as an investment of money and they hope that the coins will increase their numismatic value in the long run. To put it simply, they can be worth hundreds of dollar or even millions. Collecting coins, in conclusion, is not just historical fun but it can also be an investment for the future.
