Quick and Easy Crafts for Easter

Did you ever notice how most children seem to be fearless when it comes to crafts? They don’t wait until they have become experts to plunge in and make fun things just for the joy of it. For those, young or old, who might be a little shy about their ability, here are a few quick and easy to create Easter items to build confidence.

– Eggshell Shells

Most people are familiar with coloring Easter eggs. But eggshells also make great material for a wide range of craft items. Hard boil a few eggs, then color one each in a primary color or make rainbow patterns. Allow to dry, then break off the shell in chunks. You could use raw eggs, but when you hard boil the eggs, you won’t have to clean or sterilize the egg shell.

Now you’ve got a large pile of colored eggshell pieces. Now What? You could use spray adhesive to glue them to a nice wicker basket. Now something plain has been turned into a rainbow of color! Try gluing the pieces to a small piece of cloth to make a vest for a doll. Apply the colored pieces to simulate miniature football shoulder pads. Or make tiny colorful shoes or a little hat for a bunny doll.

– Paper Plate Easter Bunny

Paper plates are another handy everyday item that can be used for simple Easter craft projects. Here’s an super easy way to use them to make a cute little Easter bunny.

Take the first paper plate and fold it in half to make a crease. Along the fold, cut about 1/3 in toward the center from each side, leaving 1/3 in the middle uncut. Now you can fold about a quarter of the paper plate down on each side, so the craft will stand up on its own. Paint or draw a pink nose and tiny black eyes onto the middle of the section.

Now take another paper plate lying flat on the table and glue the rim to it. Use still another plate to cut out some bunny rabbit ear shapes. Color the interiors pink with crayon, colored marker or hobby paint. Leave the border white, like real rabbit’s ears. Attach the ears to the standing section made earlier by sliding them into the slits made by your cuts and glue them into place.

Now you’ve got a bunny rabbit who is sticking his head up out of his little rabbit hole to take a look around!

– Easter Bunny Doll

Easter bunny dolls are simple and fun to make. Just take a few stips of felt and some stuffing and you can create a cute looking stuffed toy. Make sure the dog doesn’t get it, though!

Cut up some old rags and curl them into arms and legs. Or, for extra fluffiness, curl them around cotton balls. You can tie the rags into place with small bits of colored thread. Tie the legs at the ankle, knee and upper thigh. Tie the arms at the wrist, elbow and just above and below the shoulder. That gives the limbs definition. Or try stuffing panty hose and tying it off to make legs and arms and cover it with scraps.

Now, repeat to make the body, neck and head, and don’t forget the ears. You could sew the arms and legs to the body or tie them together with overlapping pieces of cloth and secure it with thread. Then you can paint the face with hobby paint, or glue some colored eggshell bits on for the nose and eyes.

Easy!

There is a new Japanese Anime game called Bakugan that kids are going crazy for. The story revolves around the lives of Bakugan and the battle brawlers who brandish them. The TV show was shown in Japan and ran for 51 episodes before coming to the U.S. and showing on Cartoon Network beginning in February 2008. It has since been created into a Bakugan game by Sega consisting of metal trading cards and spring loaded miniature action figure. Kids love to play Bakugan and it is a game that parents should not be afraid of their children being interested in as it gives them a way to interact without video games.

The first step in getting started with Bakugan is the purchase of a Bakugan starter pack. This contains a pack of metal trading cards and a spring loaded action figure. Specifically you will get 6 Bakugan, 8 magnetic Gate cards and a set of instructions. The starter pack is considered a good deal since buying individual Bakugan would cost far more.

Over time your kid will decide what color they will like the best. The starter pack includes Bakugan that are represented by attribute by their various colors. The Earth is represented by Sub-Terra which is brown. Pyrus is red and represents fire. Aquos is blue and represents water, Ventus is green and represents air. The light is represented by Haos and is a white color. Darkus represents darkness and is black.

Over time your kid will choose what their favorite color is and therefore what their favorite Bakugan will be. You will notice which color that your child is more likely to play with. That will allow you be more selective in future purchases of a Bakugan battle pack.

Kids will get much enjoyment out of getting involved with playing Bakugan. They will be forced to use skills that will involve strategy and math. Parents should embrace the game as it will get the kids more involved with their friends and not stuck in front of the TV.

The dream catcher has been a part of Native American culture for generations. The positive dreams would slip through the hole in the center of the dream catcher, and glide down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The negative dreams would get caught up in the web, and expire when the first rays of the sun struck them. Dream catchers have become extremely popular with people who enjoy arts and crafts. In this article, we’ll walk you step by step through the process of creating one of these beautiful pieces.

Dream catchers were originally made out of willow, sage and deer sinew. Modern dream catchers are made with wood or metal wrapped in leather strips and artificial sinew. The decoration of the web along with the shape, size and colors used is left to the artistic tastes of the individual. Feathers attached to the dream catcher are meant to assist the flight of good dreams. Although selecting the materials is usually a matter of preference, typically to make a dream catcher you will need about 7 feet of thin suede, glue, a 6 inch metal or wooden ring, waxed nylon string, 12-16 pony beads, 12-16 feathers, scissors and a clothes pin. The colors of the beads and feathers can be any you choose.

The most difficult thing about the arts and crafts project of making dream catchers is making the web. Once you have covered the hoop with leather or suede and the glue has dried completely, tie a long strand of sinew or another piece of suede onto the hoop with a secure knot. Carefully work your way around the hoop making a slip stitch at about every inch, or inch and a half. Ideally, the spaces should be uniform but don’t worry if they are not perfect. Once you get back to the top, slip stitch into the first loop that you made and repeat the process until you have just a small hole in the center. If you want to make your dream catcher more decorative, you can slip beads onto the web as you go. Tie a knot at the end and cut off any excess material.

To make the loop to hang your Dream Catcher, use a 12″ piece of suede lacing. Fold it in half and tie a knot in the open end. At the top of the ring, attach the lacing and slip the loop end through the ring and then around the ring and over the knot. Pull the lacing tight to secure it in place. To make the hanging sections, cut three 8″ pieces of suede. Tie two 8″ pieces of suede lacing about one third of the way up each side of the ring using a double knot. Slip 3 colored pony beads onto each piece of lacing and secure with a knot. Tie the last 8″ piece of lacing to the top middle of the ring. Slip three pony beads onto each piece of lacing. Finally, push two feathers up inside the beads on each piece of lacing.

Arts and crafts make wonderful presents and a homemade dream catcher is an especially thoughtful present. It make take some practice to get the weaving right, but the effort is worth it. As you get more experience with the craft of making dream catchers, you can experiment with different colors of suede and leather, beads, feathers and ring sizes. As with all of the artistic craft projects you may undertake, no two pieces need to look the same.

Easter is due to arrive soon, so it’s time once again to start making the Easter crafts I create every year. Each Easter season allows me to once again get creative. It also presents me with the task of looking on the ’Net for new Easter craft ideas. But that’s not a bad thing, and I actually look forward to it. I’m confident that I can find everything I need pretty quickly.

Sometimes I my process is to search for free Easter clip art that helps me get the right vibe for the project. Since the focus is on Easter, I will restrict my searches to Easter bunny or baby chick clip art. Staying focused should be simple, because spring and Easter clip art is all over the place during this season.

I also find that Easter cards that anyone can access on the Internet can inspire great ideas for Easter crafts. Given that the cards already feature fantastic Easter themes, a tremendous craft project can be created pretty easily.

Super Easter crafts can also be made with scrapbooking supplies. A variety of photo frames, borders and other embellishments exist that can make your project special. As an example, there are three-dimensional stickers that can literally make your project pop. In addition, colorful scrapbook papers you can either download off the Internet or buy in a store will add a lot to the project. These components are used by professional card designers, so using them wisely will give you professional looking results.

So as you plan to make Easter crafts this year, remember to use the ‘Net. Keep things basic and use images to do the heavy lifting. That will give you good results and will help you create with ease. A lot of compliments from friends and family will probably result. And if you want to sell your crafts at craft fairs or online, you can be confident that your crafts will be top quality.

How Artists Can Create Their Own Vision

artists

Artwork from some of history’s most prolific artists can carry price tags in the millions of dollars. Some are priceless. That’s because the artistic value of these works cannot be measured. How can you put a price on the coy expression of the Mona Lisa or the haunting aura of The Scream. We value art because it makes us experience emotions. Artists know that a piece of themselves goes into every stroke of a brush. In this article, well discuss tips that will help every artist create their own vision.

One of the most difficult challenges that an artist faces is making their artwork flow. If you think your paintings are too tight and controlled, try some of these exercises. They will help you relieve the pressure that you may be feeling and put you back in touch with the creativity flowing in you. First, try painting with your ‘wrong’ hand. If you’re left-handed, put your brush in your right hand, and if you’re right-handed, put it in your left. It may feel awkward, but it is this lack of co-ordination that will help you because it forces you to be less rigid. It may also help you to see your subject from a different perspective.

Lighting is also very important to artistic works. This is because it gives the subject a very special look or feel. Most prefer to work in dim or muted lighting. Think about every art gallery you’ve ever been to. Chances are that the lighting has been soft. This is because harsh lighting makes it difficult to really absorb the emotion of a piece of art. Even an artist who works with still life can benefit from using soft lighting. Instead of using a direct light, move the light to the side. It will give you more interesting shadows to work with. Also, don’t feel that you have to include every detail you see. Your painting should reflect what your heart and imagination sees and not necessarily what your eyes see. You’ll be surprised at how little is necessary to capture the essence of something.

Sometimes letting go of the rules is the key to creating a truly beautiful and moving painting or other art and craft project. For artists who paint or draw, going with the flow is so important. To get an image that isn’t stiff and controlled, don’t paint outlines. Objects are three-dimensional, so paint or draw them that way. Also, don’t worry if your paint drips. Look at the world around us. Nothing natural has a truly perfect edge. Dripping paint adds fluidity to your work.

Visual artists can experience the same kind of block that writers do. If your work doesn’t have the flow and emotion that you want it to have, then take a break and go for a walk, cook dinner, or doodle on a sketch pad. It’s during these times that you may be hit with inspiration. Artists sometimes put too much pressure on themselves to create a masterpiece. Painting for marketability or mass appeal isn’t real art. Paint what you honestly feel and the rest will flow naturally.

Nitro Helicopter: Still flying higher

Nitro Helicopters are fast becoming the “boy’s toy” of choice for, well, of course…grown men.

RC helicopters have long been popular with the weekend hobbyist. Thrills and spills will keep you coming back for more as these toys have come a long way. Boredom is not an option.

Hobbyists are arguably first drawn to RC Helicopters because they want the thrill of flight without the challenges of flying a plane; such as finding the right space for take off and landing and the risks of losing your craft from range.

Beginners get enough skill in a short time to really start enjoying helicopters early on. With a shortened learning curve the thrills start pouring in rapidly, cutting short the phase of frustration one endures whilst learning.

The nitro helicopter is the Holy Grail (in my humble opinion) of the RC hobbyist – but I am biased of course. The nitro helicopter, to me, is like a compact version of the real thing. It gives the flyer a visceral feeling as they sense the power and agility behind its gas powered engineering.

The biggest decision for a new buyer is between an electric RC helicopter and a nitro helicopter. First up is a visit to the corner hobby your store in your suburb or town. They love hobbies and will help you immensely sorting through the information.

Training with a flight simulators is essential for the new starter. Obviously this will give you a good taste of things to come and general feel for the craft so you don’t dump it in the lake or in a tree on your first day. Safety first they say.

I’ve seen it a hundred times before; chances are you will fall into this hobby head first and lose yourself in it for hours. This may sound like a stretch, but all hobbies have the ability to give you that escape that soothes the soul.

OK..Here's the breakdown; electric versus nitro:

Electric is a great option for the novice, here are its advantages;

•    Cheaper to get started
•    Low maintenance
•    They are quieter (won’t trouble your neighbors!)
•    Environmentally friendly
•    No ongoing gas costs
•    Typically easier to operate

Disadvantages of the electric RC helicopter:

•    Shorter flying times

•    Crashes can cause battery to break which can be expensive
•    Battery needs to charge between flights

All in all, electric RC helicopters are a great way to start out in the hobby.

More serious helicoper fans tend to go for the nitro helicopter. Nitro helicopters can be quickly addictive.

In essence, nitro helicopters resemble the real thing a lot more than their electric counterparts. The big thrill comes from the sound and feel of the gas propelled engine. The smell also adds to the realism.

Also adding to the realism is the engine design and mechanics. More akin to a “real” engine the “tinkerer” in you gets the chance to play with tuning and optimizing the engine. Conversely, this adds to the maintenance, requiring cleaning after each session as well as more risk of engine troubles. So…this is either a turn on or a put off, depending on the individual.

You get what you pay for they say and the nitro helicopter is going to cost you money. Yearly costs for gas can add up to the range of $1500.

Advantages of the nitro helicopter:

•    More realistic: smells and sounds
•    Short beaks between flights
•    Less damage usually incurred during a crash
•    More flight time

Disadvantages (depending on how you look at it)

•    Gas costs
•    Power up time can be longer •    More fiddly

Lastly, there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to the choice between electric and nitro helicopter. Find what’ best for your budget and just get stuck in. Your preference will become clear with alittel experience. Also, electric technology has come along in leaps and bounds and there are many models now which will outperform the nitro ones; but I believe they are still too expensive.

How to Make Crocheted Baby Blankets

It seems that when people hear about a pregnancy one of their first instincts is to purchase something for the baby. There are so many items that are available for infants. It is amazing the amount of money people will spend to purchase things that will be used for a matter on months. There are also people that want to make something for a baby and for girls flower bedding. Many times these are people that do not make any other homemade items. My sister is one of these people.

When she was still in high school our oldest sister became pregnant with twins. My school aged sister decided that she was going to make crocheted baby blankets for the twins. She was just learning to crochet, so this was a big project for her girls fairy bedding. This was back in the day when the sex of the baby was not known prior to the birth. My sister decided that she would make the crocheted baby blankets in soft pastel colors. She would make each one different so that people would be able to tell the twins apart. She started on the crocheted baby blankets when our sister was five months pregnant.

It took her several tries to get the baby blankets started. She knew how to do the chain stitch and how to single crochet, however the instructions for the crocheted baby blankets included double and triple crocheting to create a pattern. Our mother did not crochet, so she was unable to help my sister. After several trips down the block to visit a neighbor woman that knew how to crochet the blankets started to grow. My sister had the first blanket of girls ballerina bedding completed and had started on the second blanket when our pregnant sister had to go on bed rest. She was starting to dilate and she still had six weeks to go before the twins would be developed enough to live.

My pregnant sister was very bored laying around waiting for the twins. My mom suggested to my other sister that she should teach her how to crochet. This would give her something constructive to do to pass the time. My two sisters got together and the crocheting began. This was the beginning of a hobby for both of them. To this day they both crochet. My two children still have their crocheted baby blankets that they received from their aunts. I also have afghans that they have made as well as beautiful dollies. The two of them get together for coffee and crocheting at least twice a month. This has been a rewarding hobby for both of them.

Beading History

The art of stringing beads together has been known to mankind since ancient times and has been practiced for many reasons including symbolizing religious beliefs. Back in the ancient world tribes used the bones of wild animals and would string them onto fibers and would then wear them for protection believing that they would be safe from bad spirits.

As civilization became more advanced man would learn how to drill and pierce holes in objects and this led to great progress in beading. Necklaces would be created from many objects that would include seashells, seed pods and nut shells as well as many other objects. Bead development would later progress by coloring the beads. Clay beads would often be coated in enamel

The Egyptians were masters of glass making and they would revolutionize bead making as glass beads were far more beautiful and could be used to make the most wonderful necklaces. They would use glass that would come in many different colors and they would combine these colored glass beads with gemstones, both precious and semi-precious. Gold and silver would also be added.

Beads would become in great demand and would become a valuable trading commodity and were traded and exported all around the world, even as far back as ancient times. Many cultures would embrace beading especially the Chinese, Babylonians and in ancient India.

The Romans also had a great influence on the development of beading and they would trade beads all over the different parts of the Roman Empire. This influence would spread to to the Vikings and the Celts who would develop wonderful amulets, necklaces and bracelets. Beading would also be embraced by the Native American Indians whose works are still used today in the latest fashions such as in turquoise colored watch bands, necklaces and belts.

Beading was and still is to this very day an important part of Native American culture. Many Indian tribes in the Americas would train their womenfolk at becoming adept in the beading arts. A technique known as bead quilling was considered to be sacred. It was the art and workmanship of bead quilling itself that was considered sacred and not the finished beaded products themselves. That is rather different to the norm in Western societies where the finished product is what is valued most and not the workmanship that created it.

Getting Started With Woodworking

For some people, woodworking might seem like an impossible task. It’s easy to believe that only woodworkers with many years of experience could produce something of any value. Happily, this simply isn’t true. Everyone has to start somewhere, even the masters. Somewhere in the past, they also began with basic woodworking projects.

If you’re serious about your new hobby, educate yourself before you begin. Learn as much as you can about the techniques and tools involved so that you’re well prepared before you start attempting your first project. You should also look into what kinds of wood are best for certain projects.

These days, there’s a ton of information out there that you can easily access. Check out some books and magazines for ideas and tips. You could also just go online and find innumerable websites that can help you get started.

Taking a class in woodworking is an excellent way to get started with this hobby. This will give you a chance to observe the techniques involved first hand. It will also give you a working knowledge of one of the most important aspects of woodworking – safety.

Never attempt even simple woodworking projects without being educated in woodworking safety. Of course there’s the risk of injury, but there’s also the chance it will turn you off your new pastime completely.

Once you start a project of your own, make sure it’s not too complicated. You would be amazed at what you can create with the simplest of tools. Try some basic projects that require only hand tools. For absolute beginners, there are kits available that require you to only put the pieces together. The wood components come pre-cut. This will allow you to get comfortable with how various parts go together without having to worry about operating tools.

As far as tools and equipment go, start small and work your way up from there. You can begin with a few hand tools and add to them when you feel comfortable and your budget allows. When you do buy tools, don’t skimp on the quality. If your tools don’t last and you have to replace them, you really haven’t saved any money in the long run.

When you reach the point where you’re confident about putting together basic projects, it’s time to tackle some more difficult tasks. Just remember, though, no matter how skilled you get at DIY woodworking, that safety is of the utmost importance.
